As an element that strengthens the ferrite phase, nickel is used especially in low-alloy steels to increase both toughness and hardenability (quenching). In nickel-alloyed steels, it is used in amounts of up to 5% Ni. Since it is generally not used alone, it is commonly combined with chromium or molybdenum.
