Ferrosilicon is a product used as a source of silicon. It reduces oxides present in metals and provides deoxidation in steel and other ferroalloys. Ferrosilicon is used in various applications, primarily in the production of carbon steel and stainless steel.
Areas of Use:
Silicon is one of the elements with the widest range of applications. In the form of sand and clay, it is used in the production of concrete and bricks.
It is highly resistant to high-temperature operating conditions. In silicate form, it plays an important role in the production of enamel, glaze, and ceramics.
Silicon is also added to the composition of steel. Silica in sand form, the main component of glass, is the most economical material with excellent mechanical, optical, thermal, and electrical properties.
When ultra-pure silicon is alloyed with boron, gallium, phosphorus, or arsenic, silicon compounds used in the electronics industry—such as transistors, solar cells, and rectifiers—are obtained.
It is used as a semiconductor in the production of electronic microchips. Silicon is also vital for life, as it forms part of the external skeletons of invertebrates such as diatoms and radiolarians. These skeletons later settle and contribute to the formation of various rock structures.
Silicon is also found in the structure of plants and the human skeleton. Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the hardest known materials.
