What Is Foundry Resin? Alkaline Phenolic and Cold Box Systems
Foundry resin is a key component of the chemical system used to bond molding and core sand so that it can withstand molten metal casting temperatures. If the resin is not selected correctly, a chain of problems such as dimensional deviations, sand sticking, low strength, or difficult shakeout after casting may occur. Altınkum Döküm’s product portfolio includes Genkar250 (Alkafen) alkaline phenolic resin, Genset147 (Alphaset) ester system, and GenA (Part 1) / GenB (Part 2) systems with Part 3 DMIPA catalyst. Each system is designed for different molding cycles and metal families.
Alkaline phenolic (Alkafen) resins cure in the presence of an ester catalyst, providing mold strength without requiring additional gas or heat. The Genkar250 + Genset147 combination allows working time and strip time to be adjusted according to foundry temperature conditions. Seasonal differences, sand temperature, and humidity can produce different results even with the same resin/hardener ratio. Therefore, the hardener type and dosage should be optimized according to the operating temperature range rather than relying on a fixed formulation.
For large molds and steel and iron castings, alkaline phenolic systems are frequently preferred in production lines where dimensional stability and surface quality are important. The homogeneity of the sand-resin mixture, mixing time, and discharge time directly affect the strength curve. Stripping too early can increase scrap, while excessive holding times can reduce production efficiency. A properly adjusted Alkafen system provides a balance between strength and shakeout performance.
In multi-component systems such as GenA / GenB + DMIPA, the mixing ratio, mixture temperature, and catalyst dosage become even more critical. Incorrect ratios can result in sticky sand, low wet or dry strength, or excessively brittle cores. The dosage of catalysts such as DMIPA can change the curing rate within seconds; therefore, equipment calibration and operator discipline are just as important as the product itself. Resin selection should be planned together with the sand type, including silica AFS fineness and reclaimability, as well as the casting geometry.
Stock availability and process recommendations for Alkafen, Alphaset, and DMIPA systems are available from Altınkum Döküm. Our Konya Central and Ankara branches provide continuous supply of Genkar250, Genset147, GenA/GenB, and Part 3 DMIPA. Our goal is not simply to supply a product from stock, but to establish the resin system that genuinely suits your production line in terms of mold strength, stripping time, and casting surface quality.
