What Is a Casting Filter Used For? Filters for Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, and Steel
A casting filter is a process component that directly affects casting quality by removing slag, sand, and non-metallic inclusions from the molten metal entering the mold cavity. Without a filter, or when the wrong filter is selected, defects such as slag marks on the surface, internal inclusions, porosity, and increased machining allowances may occur. The correct filter reduces turbulence, enables more laminar filling, and lowers grinding and finishing costs. Altınkum Döküm supplies suitable ceramic foam and casting filters from stock for cast iron, ductile iron, and steel casting lines.
Filters for cast iron and ductile iron are generally selected on a silicon carbide (SiC) basis due to their suitability for iron casting temperatures and their resistance to thermal shock. For steel castings, zirconia-based solutions are more commonly preferred because they must withstand higher pouring temperatures and different chemical conditions. Cast iron, ductile iron, and steel applications are not interchangeable simply because they all use the term “filter.” Using the wrong material can result in premature clogging or inadequate filtration.
PPI (pores per inch) and filter dimensions should be determined according to the casting weight and gating system design. A filter with excessively fine pores may clog prematurely, while one with overly coarse pores may provide insufficient filtration. The cleanliness of the filter seat, seating tolerance, and pouring temperature are also as important as the filter itself; even a high-quality filter cannot compensate for a poorly designed or improperly prepared filter seat. The filter's position within the gating system also affects the calm filling of the mold and the entrainment of gases.
The use of ceramic casting filters is a practical investment that can reduce rejection rates, particularly in export castings and production lines with high surface-quality requirements. In ductile iron, residues from magnesium treatment, slag in cast iron, and refractory inclusions in steel have different characteristics, so filter selection should be based on the specific metal family. Consistently using the correct filter can often provide a faster return in reducing customer complaints and internal defects discovered later than measures such as resin or coating changes.
You can determine the appropriate filter type for your cast iron, ductile iron, or steel production line together with our Konya Central and Ankara teams. At Altınkum Döküm, we coordinate stock continuity, appropriate PPI and size recommendations, and fast delivery. Our goal is to provide a filling system that delivers cleaner metal, smoother surfaces, and lower scrap rates.
